Most states have a waiting week, so every day you wait is a day of benefits you don't get back. Start now.
The waiting week, benefit amounts, and where you file (usually the state where you worked) vary by state, and a few states have no waiting week at all. Check your state's agency, linked in the state picker, for the rules that apply to you.

The timing lines up with a protected characteristic: age, race, sex, pregnancy, disability, religion, or national origin.
It came right after a complaint, a medical or FMLA leave, or whistleblowing. That can be retaliation.

HOW TO FIND ONE, AFFORDABLY
You may need a lawyer less often, and more affordably, than you think. Many employment lawyers give a free first consultation, and wage and discrimination cases are often taken on contingency, meaning you pay nothing up front.

Common questions
Is there a waiting week for unemployment?
Most states make you wait one unpaid week before benefits start; a few (Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey) have none. Either way, filing late costs you weeks you can't get back, so file the week you're laid off. Your state's page here shows whether a waiting week applies.
Are unemployment benefits taxable?
Yes. They count as income on your federal return. You can ask the state to withhold taxes from each payment, or set money aside yourself, so tax season isn't a surprise (see IRS Topic 418).
What is weekly certification?
Each week you're claiming, you confirm to the state that you're still unemployed and meeting the rules, usually including a job search. Miss your certification day and that week's payment can be delayed or denied, so set a reminder for it.
Which state do I file in?
The state where you worked, not where you live now. File through that state's official agency, never a third-party site. Your state's page here links straight to the official portal and lists how to file (online, phone, or in person).
